AGE: 17; in her introduction at age 16, it's obvious that katniss considers herself the caretaker of her family. she references often the fact that she is the one with mouths to feed, and she jokes with gale about her sister, prim, being her kid. the early death of her father and her mother's subsequent catatonia (to say nothing of the atmosphere of terror and fear in district 12) have forced katniss to grow up quickly. she is effectively the parental figure in her household, caring for her younger sister prim and her mother, a well-meaning but emotionally fragile woman. while not of age, katniss already thinks like a woman ten years her senior. the difference between seventeen and eighteen means little to her state of mind, as at age seventeen she's already learned how to fake intimacy for her own survival, pretending to be pregnant and married during the quarter quell to garner sympathy and outrage for her and peeta's position.

INCENTIVE/FIT: katniss everdeen is a desperate woman. at her current canon point, peeta, the person she cares about in the same way she cares about her sister, both of them good and gentle and in need of protection from people who can do ugly things like katniss herself - has been taken by the capitol. he's being held captive, forced to film propaganda announcements and do interviews where he speaks indirectly to katniss herself. she's going out of her mind with worry for him, and the pressure of being the mockingjay for her own people, trying to keep up with coin's stipulations for katniss's position as figurehead for the rebellion. basically, if she were offereed a deal that would guarantee peeta's safety and that of her family during the rebellion, she'd take it. she is taking it. that way, she'll be able to concentrate on the rebellion and not have to be distracted and driven mad with worry.

as for her fit, while katniss is an extremely solitary individual who's uncomfortable with the idea of physical intimacy, she would do literally anything for the few people she loves. that, and her experience in faking a relationship with peeta for the capitol's benefit have both given her the necessary tools to survive in eudio. it's extremely unlikely that anything romantic would develop with someone she doesn't know from home, but the basic act of being physically close to someone, she would gladly undertake, because her reasons for being here are so vitally important to her.

[ the woods are the only place where katniss feels like herself anymore.

she thought she'd lost that, after the bombing of district 12. both the woods, and herself. but there are trees in eudio too, tall, old growth with thick bark and leaves that flutter overhead in the breeze.

she doesn't entirely trust this city. there's a part of her that's always looking for the flicker of a forcefield out of the corner of her eye. in the forest, alone, at least katniss can let go of some of her trepedation and fear. she hunts for her food, she climbs tall trees and she sits in them, feeling the breeze on her face.

her stomach is full for the first time in years. she is alone, but her family will be safe because of her actions here. peeta will be safe. the rest doesn't matter, as far as she's concerned. if this turns out to be another trick, another game, she'll figure that out too.

there isn't anything she wouldn't do to protect her loved ones. it's not as if she hasn't killed before. ]
