[ late on Valentine's evening, long after she's already gotten her first gift from Jack, Katniss is handed a hand-carved lovespoon. it's thin but solid, with hearts and a snowflake pattern chiselled out of it, and decorative engravings; a dotted outline, a tree in the middle, and a bow and arrow on the back of the spoon's bowl for her.
when he gives it to her, Jack makes an awkward attempt to explain the Welsh tradition; to assure her that he's not literally just giving her a single spoon, even he's not that heartless, it's a dumb spoon that humans made into a sentimental thing. and he babbles a little uncharacteristically, with a lot less drawling wit and a lot more fast-paced nervousness, that he probably could have done a better job if he'd been smart enough to think of it earlier so it's kind of lame and he can make her a better one later, and he hasn't carved anything in a while either, they make them way better in Wales—
and there's a flush painted across his cheeks the whole while that gets darker as he goes on and on. mottled shades of blue and purple like bruises, a strange coloration that Katniss has probably gotten used to, living with him and seeing him blush if she ever tries to pull him in close. ]
